Pedagogy For Educators

New Paradigms for a Deeper Analysis

Security in Context wants to reorient the way educators and students research, learn, and teach the critical approaches to security, global and political economy studies.

The pedagogy section within Security in Context is aimed primarily at educators and students of global studies, international political economy, critical security and militarism studies, critical international relations, and other related fields. Our goal is to provide resources for educators who want to incorporate critical perspectives on global affairs into their syllabi.

Security in Context will also support the development of junior scholars through small grants, research internships and intensive, short-term virtual or in-person training sessions.

Types of Resources

Critical Texts on Security
Security in Context’s “Critical Texts on Security” Series features short, annotated entries covering politics, history, gender, political economy and culture. The Critical Texts series, which can be found here, is collaboratively produced by the Security in Context network.

Critical Lexicon
The Critical Lexicon series offers alternative understandings of prevailing frames, practices and concepts of security. The goal of this series is to produce newly informed, encyclopedia-style definitions of key security related concepts.

Teaching Modules
We plan to offer an online, curated interactive platform of resources for critical security studies, critical global studies, and international political economics. These will be specifically tailored for the needs of teachers, researchers, and students. Adapted from our research outputs, the modules serve as an efficient tool for course design on the macro level, or for lesson planning on the micro level. They also are ideal for students’ own inquiries into specific topics, countries, and disciplines. The Teaching Modules will be developed as part of a special collaboration between Security in Context and MESPI.

Monthly Digest
The Monthly Digest provides a list of recent publications, calls, conferences and other items relevant to the critical global, security, and international political economy studies audience. All descriptions taken from their original sources unless otherwise indicated. If we’ve missed something, or if you have items you’d like to contribute for future digests, please email us at: submissions@securityincontext.org

Videos
Our pedagogical videos are designed to be used by educators at the high school and undergraduate level in courses on international affairs, international political economy and critical security studies. Explore our videos here.
